Why Low HDL is Bad and How to Raise It

The message that appears to be making the rounds at the present moment is that high cholesterol is a very bad thing. While this can be true, at the same time it is also quite misleading. There are two types of cholesterol in the body, HDL cholesterol and LDL cholesterol. The truth is that people need to worry about preventing LDL cholesterol levels from going high at the same time that they prevent HDL cholesterol levels from going low.

Concerns about HDL Cholesterol being too low

There are a number of concerns that a person should have regarding their cholesterol levels, but they seldom hear about concerns that it might be too low. However, this is exactly the case with HDL cholesterol. An unhealthy HDL level is one that is far too low and therefore you need to take steps ensuring that your HDL levels remain close to normal.

For an average adult male who is healthy, their HDL level should be 45. For every point below 45 that your HDL cholesterol level is, the risk of heart attack is four times as great as it would be for every point above the normal level that your LDL cholesterol level would make it. This should convey the seriousness of the situation when it comes to maintaining sufficiently high HDL levels. This is just one reason why the high cholesterol message is one that can be true, but can also be misleading.

Raising your HDL

There are a number of things that you can do to raise your HDL and at the same time lower your LDL. Keep in mind that both the HDL cholesterol and LDL cholesterol have optimal ranges within the human body and that when you deviate away from perfect health, the HDL tends to drop while the LDL tends to increase. Therefore, it makes perfect sense that working to make yourself healthier would have positive effects on both the HDL and LDL levels and cause them return to the healthy level they should be.

The first thing that you should do is quit any "bad" habits that could be affecting your health. This includes using tobacco products, consuming alcohol and any other form of recreational activity that can cause negative long-term health effects. In addition to this, you should also find the ideal body weight for your height and aspire to get to that weight through a strict regimen of diet and exercise. Once you have achieved that ideal body weight, you should change your diet and exercise over to a maintenance regime, making sure that you exercise on a regular basis. Doing this should stabilize your low HDL and bring it back in line with what the average would be for the average person of your age. None of these things are easy to accomplish, but if you do them you will decrease the risks of having a heart attack, especially if either of your parents had a history of heart disease.
