High Cholesterol in Teenagers
A generation ago, the idea of cholesterol levels and teens was really much ado about nothing. The proportion of teenagers that had high cholesterol problems was so small that high cholesterol in teenagers was really more of a publicity stunt than anything else. It is interesting how truth seems to imitate fiction however as just one generation later, high cholesterol in teenagers has become a very serious problem for a large proportion of the country. Without sound advice on what to do about this problem, most parents just allow their teenagers to continue down the unhealthy road with an eventual stop in a hospital somewhere down the line. If you want to prevent this from happening to your children, you need to think prevention first and treatment second.
Prevention is of course the easiest way to deal with high cholesterol in anyone and for that reason teenagers need to use prevention to curb some of the habits that could cause them serious health problems later on in life. Most doctors will say that as long as a teenager cleans up their act by the time they hit the start of the fourth decade of life (i.e. 30 years and older), they shouldn't have any long lasting health problems as a result of their high cholesterol problems. However, if you want to promote healthy living in your teenagers, it needs to start during the formative years of their development or you run the risk of the bad lifestyle being built into them as an adult at which point deprogramming it out of them becomes a much harder task to accomplish.
If your teen already has high cholesterol problems, the good news is that high cholesterol is treated in teens the same way it is prevented. Start your teen on a healthy diet while at the same time adding a lot of exercise to that diet. Without exercise as a problem, you'll find that your teenager will get a lot healthier a lot quicker. Bodies at that age are programmed to change quite quickly in response to environmental stimuli, so if you remove the junk and video games from your teenager's life and replace them with healthy food and outdoor sports, you'll find the changes to be quite remarkable and quite quick at the same time.
When a lot of parents learn about high cholesterol problems with their teenagers, the initial inclination is to get them cholesterol treatments. It is part of the culture that everyone thinks a pill can solve anything, but especially in the case of a teenager you need to fight this compulsion. Teenagers are quite capable of bringing themselves back into healthiness without the aid of pills and indeed a teenager taking a cholesterol pill is unnecessary in well over 99.9% of cases. There are rare cases that are the exceptions, but unless you know right away that you're not dealing with a normal cholesterol problem, you don't need a pill to help your teenager out. There's no sense in encouraging drug dependency at a time when it is not necessary at all.
