One of the most common health problems in America these days is high cholesterol. Most of the time, the treatment solution is medication. While this may work, there can be undesirable side affects to cholesterol medication. And in many cases, high cholesterol is the tip of the iceberg, medically speaking. While many people may not realize it, there are numerous ways to lower cholesterol naturally and help get one’s health and lifestyle back under their control.

The first step is to stop smoking. Yes, smoking is an addiction and it can be very very difficult to stop. However, without stopping smoking, all the other steps taken to reduce cholesterol numbers are far less effective. There is a reason that life insurance companies force smokers to pay higher premiums – they die faster than non-smokers. Stopping smoking just by itself can lower cholesterol. While many people want to lower their cholesterol without medication, utilizing the most advanced forms of smoking cessation medication on the market (patches, nicotine gum, and newer pills) can be a good way to jump-start this all important first step.

Step two is to exercise. Doctors will suggest to their patients that exercise will lower cholesterol naturally, but it is often said in passing. What kind of exercise is the best? Anything that gets a person moving. Walking is a great first step, and may be as far as many people are willing to take it. Walking for 30 minutes every day is a wonderful way to get started with exercise. Joining a gym is also a great way to exercise, however it is not necessary. There is a growing trend in fitness communities for bodyweight exercises – pushups, pull-ups, jumping jacks, burpees, etc. Others are making the case that active lifestyles that include tennis, golf, bicycling, and other kinds of weekend sports are enough. An added bonus – reduced stress.

The third and perhaps most important step in how to lower cholesterol naturally is to eat healthy. Again, what does that mean? Cut out red meat. Although it may taste great, many studies (both scientific and anecdotal) make the case that increased consumption of red meat increases cholesterol. So either removing red meat or significantly reducing it in one’s diet can greatly help. The next step in the diet change is to eat more leafy green vegetables, which for most people means salads. However, avoid the thick and creamy salad dressings that pretty much negate the point of the salad and stick to the lighter dressings. The simpler the salad, the better it will be for the diet. The final step in eating healthy is to stop eating junk food, and that includes as much processed foods as can reasonably be eliminated from one’s diet. Why buy a can of fruit when the fruit section of the store has a rich selection, minus the sugar and chemicals? Whenever possible, choose fresh food over processed food.

Following these three simple steps – stop smoking, exercise every day and eating healthy – are the best ways to lower cholesterol naturally. There are also natural supplements that can take the place of dangerous statins.
